Tips on how to use Artifact bag activity in the Social Studies classroom:
- Teachers can access resources and artifacts from local museums, antique stores, yard sales, and more.
- provide scaffolding instruction- you can be a guide and resource to your students! This goes along with being a model for your students.
- Have students make predictions and questions about the artifacts. Such as: Where did it come from? When did it come from? What civilization used this? How are people in this picture related?
- Have students work in pairs so they can share ideas and think aloud.
- Give students directions and steps that you want them to follow and what they should find during the activity. Also provide worksheets that they can answer as they are discovering.
- provide literature and research materials that are related to the history and/or information on the artifact.
- Prepare students that they will be presenting their artifact in front of the class, so they must be knowledgeable about their object and be prepared to answer classmates’ questions.
- As the teacher, you can choose a variety of ways for your students to use artifact bags. It could be apart of a research project, or an opening activity to a lesson.
